Jacob Collier a été une révélation pour moi, car il m'a apporté de nouveaux types de sons, et une explication sur les raisons de leur fonctionnement. Dans une vidéo théorique qu'il a réalisé avec June Lee, il a expliqué comment il aimait déformer la structure rythmique 4/4 de base en utilisant une subdivision irrégulière. Il a expliqué que la raison pour laquelle il faisait cela était qu'il voulait que sa musique sonne comme la vie, et que la vie n'était pas linéaire. Cette phrase résonne encore en moi aujourd'hui. The Journey Was Not Straight combine deux des 'trucs' de Jacob les plus célèbres : la subdivision impaire (ici, le morceau est en 4/4 mais chaque temps est subdivisé en 7 espaces rythmiques égaux) et les super modes : des gammes qui vont plus loin qu'une octave. Aussi, j'adore l’ambiguïté dans l'harmonie. C'est la principale raison pour laquelle je suis autant fan des accords de onzième. Mais cette fois, j'ai décidé de représenter l'ambiguïté harmonique non pas par un seul accord qui pourrait être interprété de différentes manières, mais par la juxtaposition de deux accords que tout semble pourtant opposer : un accord de super lydien, du côté droit du cercle, et un accord de super locrien, du côté gauche du cercle. De cette liaison improbable transparait mon combat pour l'acceptation des personnes non-binaires, et plus généralement des personnes qui ne se satisfont pas des deux côtés extrêmes d'un spectre, quel qu'il soit.

Jacob Collier was a revelation to me, beceause he brought to me new type of sounds, and an explanation on why it worked. In a theory video he made with June Lee, he explained how he liked to deform basic 4/4 rythmic structure by using an odd subdivison. He explained that the reason he did that was because he wanted his music to sound like life, and that life was not straight. This sentence still resonates in me today. The Journey Was Not Straight combines two of the most famous Jacob's favorite tricks: the odd-subdivision (here, the piece is in 4/4 but each beat is subdivided in 7 even rythm space) and the super modes: scales that goes further than an octave. Also, I love ambiguity in harmony. That's the main reason why I'm such a fan of the eleventh chords. But this time, I decided to represent the harmonic ambiguity not by a single chord that could be interpreted in different ways, but by the juxtaposition of two chords that everything seems to oppose: a super lydian chord, on the right side of the circle, and a super locrian chord, on the left side of the circle. From this improbable link my struggle for the acceptance of non-binary people, and more generally people who are not satisfied with the two extremes of any spectrum, is apparent.
